What is the cause of excessive hair loss?

A number of factors can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or have been subjected to major surgery, you may suddenly lost in a lot of hair. This type of hair loss is related to the stress of illness and is temporary.

Hormonal problems may cause hair loss. If the thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, you may be falling hair. Usually, this type of hair loss can be controlled by the treatment of thyroid disease. Hair loss may occur if there is an imbalance in the male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens. Correcting the hormone imbalance may stop the hair loss.

Many women notice that their hair loss about 3 months after having a baby. This decrease is also related to hormones. During pregnancy, high levels of certain hormones cause the body to keep hair that normally would fall. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, that hair falls out, and starts again the normal cycle of growth and decline.

Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners (also called anticoagulants), medicines used to treat gout, high blood pressure or heart problems, vitamin A (if too much is taken ) birth control pills and antidepressants.

Certain infections can cause hair loss. Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children. The infection is easily treated with antifungal medications.

Finally, hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Since hair loss may be an early sign of a disease, it is important to determine the cause in order to treat it.

Certain? Hairstyles or treatments can cause hair loss?

Yes, if you wear ponytails, braids hair curlers stitched or too tight, the tension on the hair can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. If you end the tension on the hair before scarring of the scalp, the hair will grow back normally. However, scarring can result in permanent hair loss. The hair treatments with hot oil or chemicals are used in the permanent may cause inflammation (swelling) of the hair follicle, which can cause scarring and hair loss.

Here's what I did

2004-02-03 06:36:07 by fellowthiningfemale

When mine started thinning, I went to my doc. He did a few tests to make sure nothing was off kilter (thyroid, testosterone levels--too much testosterone in a female can make hair fall out). Those were fine so he attritubted it to some physical stresses on my body in the past year (knee surgery, car accident, weight loss...). He put me on iron and biotin supplements and I started using women's Rogaine. I'm happy w/ the results. Good luck! Oh, and also, I highly recommend you cut your hair short--it's a great help mentally, b/c the longer your hair, the more you "appear" to be losing.
