The hair cycle:The life cycle of a hair on the head is 3-4 years. It is composed of the anagen (growth), the catagen (antenatal) and telogen (resting) phase. In the telogen phase, the anchoring of the hair in the hair follicle (hair bed) solves this leads to physiological hair loss (60-100 head hairs per day). Since the phases of the various hair on your head run asynchronously (in contrast to some animal species), it is not like some animals at the regular failure of the entire coat. The anagen lasts approximately 3 years, the catagen and telogen three weeks for about 3 months. Accordingly, at least 85% of the scalp hairs in the anagen phase, 10-15% in the telogen phase and 0.2-1% are in the catagen phase. The end of the hair cycle is defined by an internal "Haarzyklusuhr". Furthermore, the cycle is influenced by external signals (hormones, growth factors, neuropeptides from nerve).
For thinning of scalp hair with hair loss occurs at faults and displacements of the hair cycle, which means the increase in the telogen to anagen (growth phase). In severe disorders (severe infections, poisoning) occurs not only in a higher proportion of telogen hairs, but to deformed (dystrophic) hair.
Causes increased hair loss:
1 Diffuse hair loss
There are more than 80 known causes hair loss. The most common are:
- Physiological hair loss:
- After the birth (neonatal hair loss)
- After childbirth (pregnancy hair loss)
Due to the hormonal changes it comes about from the 8th Week after birth physiologically to increased hair loss, the normalized spontaneously after a few months. Rarely the hair loss is so strong that it must be treated hormonally.
- After puberty: For girls 16 to 20, it sometimes comes to increased hair loss. This is due to hormonal changes in this phase.
- Age Hair Loss: Physiological way the hair with age due to shrinkage of the hair follicles thinner and finer. Since every person (including women) are usually more than 50% of his hair loses in old age and the hair is thinner in itself, the coat in the elderly is very thinned out.

I'm banking on it, for me at least, being a hormonal problem. I never had this problem until I had a Mirena IUD inserted to prevent pregnancy. The Mirena has a progesterone-type hormone in it, and for me, my cycle eventually stopped completely. I had it removed last November after having it for 2 1/2 years with plently of hair loss during that time (still continues, but it has only been 8 months--could take a year to straighten out hormones). I've also been told that it could be a lack of essential fatty acids, so I've been taking fish oil caps daily for about 2 weeks now (too soon to tell on that, but can't hurt b/c otherwise very good for you)
